Built in 1875 by principle designer, Edwin Clark this Victorian engineering masterpiece provided an essential 50-foot vertical link between two navigable waterways, the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal. As a boat lift it shortened journeys by cutting out the old route via the Bridgewater Canal. Boats were lifted up, two at a time, in giant tanks of water. It is only one of two working boat lifts still in operation today in the UK and was restored in 2002 to become fully hydraulic after a £7 million investment. The Canal & River Trust showcase this ‘wonder of the Waterways’ through the visitor centre and exhibition in addition to offering river cruises to help discover the industrial heritage of the area and why the lift was so important then and now. Customised tours offer an insight to the control room and machine deck with behind the scenes access to this historic waterway architecture. Set along the picturesque River Weaver groups are welcome to utilise the centre and boat trips to host meetings & events.
